Designing a new hand plane – departing from 150 years of tradition. “More wood, less metal”. That was the brief from the client. The traditional infill panel plane has been around for over 150 years, and while experts can tell the difference between a Norris panel plane and one made by Stewart Spiers, the overall form, style, and general look had not changed. So how and where do you begin to rethink the traditional panel plane?
This talk and photo presentation will focus on how I started this process from initial drawings, to mock-ups, to the first prototype of the K13 plane.
